Mumbai: Assamese film "Village Rockstars" has been announced as India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the prestigious Academy Awards to be held in February 2019.

India's Oscar entries in the recent past have included Newton (last year), Court, Liar's Dice, Visaranai and The Good Road. Notably, "Village Rockstars" had bagged the Best Feature Film trophy at the 65th National Film Awards, besides also winning Best Child Artist, Best Location Sound Recordist and Best Editing. India has finally picked a film for it's official entry to Oscars 2019 and we are certain it is not what you thought. The film was directed by Rima Das.

Rima Das had earlier told The Indian Express, "I did not have any storyboard for Village Rockstars". Helmed by Rima Das, the film revolves around a 10-year-old girl belonging to a remote village in Assam who aspires to become a guitarist.

According to Indian Express, Jury member Anant Mahadevan said, "Village Rockstars is the closest film made by global standards".

Village Rockstars was shot in Das's native village of Chhaygaon and most of the cast members are non-actors from the village, including her niece Bhanita Das who plays Dhunu.

In the film, Dhunu's family that consists of her widowed mother Basanti and her elder brother Manabendra, represents the life of the villagers.

29 films including Raazi, Padmaavat Hichki, October, Love Sonia, Gulabjaam, Mahanati, Pihu, Kadvi Hawa, Bhogda, Revaa, Bioscopewala, Manto, 102 Not out, Padman, Bhayanakam, Ajji, Nude, Gali Guliiyan were submitted as nominations. The coming-of-age film is set for a country-wide release on September 28, 2018.

It is that time of the year again when one film from India enters the Academy Awards to get selected in the Best Foreign Film category.
