"They whipped up a whirlpool that overturned (three) boats", a witness told state agency ANA.

The Greek coast guard on Friday closed a world-famous beach on the holiday island of Zakynthos after seven people were injured in a rockfall.

One of the island's main attractions, Navagio has a shipwreck on the shore and is surrounded by steep cliffs.

As reported by the Evening Standard, Josh O'Connell, 21, of Kilkenny, Ireland works for a local tour company and described the terrifying scene.

A Czech woman suffered back injuries and was taken to hospital, another six people, including two children were treated for minor injuries. According to the Associated Press, the incident began when a large chunk of limestone fell from a cliff into the ocean, creating a large wave that caused several small boats to capsize.

Small boats are capsized after a landslide occurred at the popular beach of Navagio, or Shipwreck Beach, on the western island of Zakynthos, Greece, Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018.

Sniffer dogs have now been deployed by local authorities to search for anyone trapped by the landslide, although the local coastguard said that everyone who had visited the beach had been accounted for. Rescue services employed sniffer dogs to search the beach itself for possible victims of the rockfall.

Authorities shut down access to the beach, which lies at the foot of a 200-metre (650-foot) cliff and is accessible only by boat, as a precaution.

"We started to hear this almighty cracking sound and the first lot came down quickly followed by the second lot", she said.
