"We're on the wrong side of this storm". But because the storm was so large it produced a destructive storm surge in New York City, and caused an estimated $65 billion in damage in the United States. Florence's maximum sustained winds were clocked on Thursday at 105 miles per hour (165 kph). Hurricane-force winds extended 80 miles (130 kilometers) from its center, and tropical-storm-force winds up to 195 miles (315 kilometers).

This image of Hurricane Florence was captured by ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst, now living and working onboard the International Space Station. "That's the primary driver of the evacuations that are underway by the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia right now". It could stall just off the coast and then drift south along the SC coast and possibly make a landfall as a weaker system if it doesn't make it clearly over the coast of North Carolina.

Rain projections also increased, with some locations along the North Carolina coast now expected to get up to 40 inches.

The result could be what the Houston area saw during Hurricane Harvey just over a year ago: catastrophic inland flooding that could swamp homes, businesses, farm fields and industrial sites.

The police chief of a barrier island in Florence's bulls'-eye said he was asking for next-of-kin contact information from the few residents who refused to leave.

He added: "Don't relax, don't get complacent". Stay on guard. This is a powerful storm that can kill. "Today the threat becomes a reality". REUTERS/Chris KeanePeople walk past a boarded up building before Hurricane Florence comes ashore in Carolina Beach, North Carolina, U.S., September 12, 2018.

About 10 million people live in areas that were under either hurricane or tropical storm warnings and watches Thursday.

But this could still be a trend that Google will pursue for its next generationof Pixelbook designs - just not to this extreme. The Pixelbook shown looks very similar to the original released in 2017, but with much smaller bezels.

A lot of people hearing this are remembering Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Though Ike had 110mph winds at landfall, it had grown very large over the Gulf of Mexico, and this large size allowed it to develop an enormous amount of "integrated energy" that manifested itself as a devastating storm surge.

The storm is now only 145 miles east-southeast from Wilmington, North Carolina, approaching the coast at a speed of 10mph (17km/h). Airlines canceled almost 1,000 flights and counting. The two hardware chains said they sent in a total of around 1,100 trucks.

Florence has forced people to cut their holidays short along the coast, while the storm's projected path includes half a dozen nuclear power plants, pits holding coal-ash and other industrial waste, and numerous pig farms that store animal waste in huge lagoons.

The storm's forward motion has slowed 11km/h since Wednesday (local time), which was predicted as the storm nears the coast.

Florence could do more than $170bn (£130bn) of damage and affect almost 759,000 homes and businesses, says analytics firm CoreLogic.

"Against my better judgment, due to emotionalism, I evacuated, " he said.

The strongest winds will occur where and when the storm makes landfall in a ring around the calm eye of the storm known as the eyewall.
