"Matthew Perry recently underwent surgery in a Los Angeles hospital to fix a gastrointestinal perforation", the actor's rep said. "He is grateful for the concern and asks for continued privacy as he heels", it read.

The 49-year-old actor, who played Chandler Bing on the sitcom, has been out of the public eye for months, even staying away from Twitter for six months.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a gastrointestinal perforation is caused by a hole which can develop through the stomach, large bowel, or small intestine.

Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and emergency surgery is usually required.

Matthew has been sober since his last rehab stint in 2001, and has been open about his battle with drug addiction throughout his career.

Perry, who famously played Chandler Bing on long-running sitcom Friends, has always been outspoken about his personal battles, including his struggles with sobriety.

"Eventually things got so bad that I couldn't hide it, and then everybody knew".

Although Matthew is in hospital for his bowel operation, he's faced previous hardship after struggling with addiction during his time on Friends.

Alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer, he was one of the most recognisable faces on TV.

Friends ended in 2004, but fans rejoiced when all 10 series were brought to Netflix in January this year.
