He was linked with a move to Manchester United throughout the summer transfer window but has stayed put in north London.

Alderweireld was one of United's top targets in the summer as manager Jose Mourinho aimed to add a world class centre-half to his back four but the club failed to bring in a central defender.

Alderweireld admitted after starring for Belgium at the World Cup in Russian Federation that he was unsure about his future at Tottenham and claimed his prolonged spell out of the side was "unjustified".

Alderweireld has insisted he had no interest in joining Manchester United.

"That's not true. This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me".

Shares of cigarette and e-cigarette maker Altria Group also rose more than 6 percent, while Philip Morris International shares were up 4 percent.

Alderweireld has yet to agree the terms of a new contract with Tottenham, and his current deal, which expires after the 2019-20 season, includes a clause that will allow him to leave for £25m next summer.

"At first I struggled to get my place in the team back but being in the first team again is a big positive for me".

Now I am just trying to help Tottenham to the best of my ability.

Indeed, Alderweireld seems to be in the good books of Mauricio Pochettino, having started three of the four games Tottenham have played this season. "Everything on my future that has been said by the press is not correct".

Tottenham will look to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat to Watford last time out when they host Liverpool at Wembley on Saturday - live on Sky Sports Main Event HD and Sky Sports Premier League HD.
