Barkley has not played for his country since the friendly against Australia prior to Euro 2016, but was handed a recall last week by boss Gareth Southgate for the Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain.

England will be looking for revenge after Zlatko Dalic's side knocked them out of the World Cup this summer, denying them the chance to face France in the final.

England do have the ability to compete with Croatia's recently crowned Federation Internationale de Football Association player of the year Luka Modric, insists Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley, who believes he can add a new dimension to the Three Lions on his global return. But sure, on the side you have more defensive work than in the middle.

"We've had a great start to the season and we want to keep it going".

Barkley certainly appears to be a more confident character than when he was a young member of former England manager Roy Hodgson's squad.

"We have gone in a different direction".

Despite impressing during pre-season, in which he scored a spectacular bicycle kick against Manchester United in the International Champions Cup, the Swiss ace has struggled to nail down a starting spot in Klopp's first XI this campaign.

"We want to get as close as possible and do as well as we can but we know it is going to be hard".

Yet following the arrival of Italian coach Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge, Barkley has made an impressive start to this season.

"I had to accept where I was at", he added.

With Southgate still desperate to find a player capable of unlocking defences at the highest level, Barkley's return to form could not have come at a better time, particularly with regulars Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard missing through injury.

While defeats in the Football League Cup and Champions League have seen the Reds lose some of their momentum built up before the last global break, positivity around the club is still high.

"The players told me it is somewhat hard to go there, as people come up to you pretty directly.

To show I can produce the goods on game day", he said.
