But in a series of videos released over the last few years, Atlas demonstrates mobility this is uncannily human: recovering after being shoved, performing backflips, jogging over a grassy field and practicing robot parkour. Despite Boston Dynamics being sold by Google's parent company Alphabet to Japanese company SoftBank for an undisclosed sum in 2017, there has been no indication as to what direction the robot's development is heading.

Atlas uses computer vision to locate its position in relation to objects, allowing it to approach and hit, or avoid, obstacles with accuracy.

At this point, Atlas' human fathers at Boston Dynamics have become masters at generating Internet buzz over the latest abilities of their machine offspring which, at least at this point, doesn't seem like it's on its way to kill you.

"The Atlas hardware takes advantage of 3D printing to save weight and space, resulting in a remarkable compact robot with high strength-to-weight ratio and a dramatically large workspace", the company continued. "Atlas keeps its balance when jostled or pushed and can get up if it tips over".

As with many of these Boston Dynamics reveals, the company is short on technical details, so it's not clear exactly how programmed the maneuver actually is.

On Thursday, Technology Review reported that DARPA, the government agency that has provided funding to Boston Dynamics, will run a competition to teach artificial intelligence "common sense".
