Soon, this game will get fourth-generation Pokemon, as well as various minor tweaks and improvements.

The awaited launch of Sinnoh-region Pokemon has been expected for a little while now, and overnight Niantic announced that the gen 4 critters would finally be making their entrance in the AR game. While Niantic released a teaser video of Generation 4 Pokemon, the details of its release date is still unknown. Changes like these will help narrow the gap between Pokemon with the highest defensive stats and other Pokemon. Looking closely at the image below, you can find the three starter Pokemon from the region.

There will also be some balance changes to the game as well.

Pokemon that have their spawn rates boosted by certain weather conditions will see a decrease in spawn rates. As you explore an area over time, you'll see an increase in the variety of Pokemon that spawn and they will start spawning at different rates.

Hubble trouble: Deep space telescope in ‘safe mode’ after mechanical fail
Rachel Osten of the Hubble team confirmed that something is wrong with the telescope's gyroscopes, which it uses for orientation. Gyroscopes are needed to keep the 340-mile-high (540-kilometer-high) Hubble pointed in the right direction during observations.

It also appears that some Pokemon's HP are getting nerfed in order to close the gap between Pokemon with high HP and low HP.

Pokemon Defense and Stamina values will be retroactively rebalanced, allowing highly defensive Pokemon to be valuable in battle by outlasting opponents rather than simply running out the clock.

The arrival of the new Sinnoh Pokemon is anticipated to change the metagame of Pokemon battling as well. On the other hand, Pokemon Defense, Defense values, and Stamina will be retroactively rebalanced for the same goal. Clearly the content is coming soon, since the game usually doesn't release trailers or press releases very far ahead of an actual release, but we don't know exactly when.
