"I ask you: "Is it right to 'take out" a human life to solve a problem?"

"How can an act that suppresses innocent and defenseless life as it blossoms be therapeutic, civil or simply human?" he argued.

Referring to abortion of unborn children with disabilities, Francis criticised advice given to parents who were told to terminate their pregnancies.

Pope Francis used the address to denounce "the suppression of human life in the mother's womb in the name of safeguarding other rights", Reuters reports.

The pope took a brief break from the October 3-28 Synod of Bishops on young people to attend the morning general audience and continue his series of talks on the Ten Commandments. "The parents, in these dramatic cases, need true closeness, true solidarity, to face the reality and overcome their understandable fears".

His comments departed from the pre-written text for his homily for the weekly audience on Saint Peter's Square. In recent weeks, the Pope has dedicated his weekly general audiences to a series of lessons and reflections on the Ten Commandments recorded in the scriptural books of Exodus and Deuteronomy.

She said: "Polling shows that even committed Catholics often ignore these comments and do what is best for their families and their lives".

"A sick child is like every other needy person of the earth, like an elder who needs assistance, like so many poor people who are struggling to get by: he or she who seems to be a problem is actually a gift from God who can pull me out of self-centeredness to help me grow In love", he said.

"It is worthwhile to accept every life because every man is worth the blood of Christ".
