To be honest, though, this sounds like it's been a complex feature for Sony to implement.

On October 10, PlayStation announced that changes to your PSN Online ID "is coming", starting with a select group of test users. It will begin as part of the PlayStation Preview Program for those who have signed up for the betas for previous PS4 software updates. For those that do get access, you'll be able to do your first change for free.

You'll have the option to show your previous ID alongside your current one in case your friends need to find you, although you'll want to be careful. Every following change will cost $9.99 for regular PlayStation Network members, while PlayStation Plus members will get a discount and pay only $4.99.

Not all games will actually support the feature, but PlayStation says "a large majority of the most-played PS4 games" will, as well as any game "originally published after April 1, 2018".

Preview program to launch at the end of November.

To make the change, authorized users can access the feature through the Settings menu or via the Profile page of your PS4.

Another caveat is that the new feature won't be compatible with all games. The first time you change your name, it will be free. Older PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita games may not support the feature and could experience errors as a result. At that time, a full list of compatible games (those published before April 1, 2018) will be released.
