Sabathia's desire to stay in NY for what's expected to be his final season was apparent, as he turned down other opportunities to remain a Yankee, the source said.

Sabathia signed a $161 million, seven-year contract with the Yankees before the 2009 season and led NY to its first World Series title since 2000, then used the leverage of an opt-out provision after the 2011 season to get a new deal that added a $25 million salary for 2016 with a $25 million team option for 2017.

"I'll play anywhere, " he said before the Yankees were eliminated by the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS "I still want to pitch".

"He's been a great Yankee and he has some time on the clock still".

An ejection in his final start of the regular season cost Sabathia a $500,000 bonus that he would have earned for reaching 155 innings pitched.

USA denies China ‘Cold War’ but deep gaps persist
While the Washington talks focused on security, trade is at the heart of tensions between the world's two biggest economies. But just as he was speaking, a top advisor to Trump, Peter Navarro, vowed to press China hard on trade.

Luis Severino and Masahiro Tanaka are the Yankees' two returning starters that are under contract for 2019.

The Yankees are also interested in signing J.A. Happ, who went 7-0 with a 2.69 ERA in 11 starts for them after being acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays at last season's trade deadline. "So he put himself in a good position as a free agent".

General manager Brian Cashman admitted Tuesday at baseball's general manager meetings that he was trying to keep Sabathia in the fold.

"The game's evolved to the point where people can see what the real numbers are behind the numbers and the recognition that whoever winds up acquiring Sonny Gray is going to acquire someone that's going to be the player, the pitcher he was more with Oakland", Cashman said. "It will lead us eventually to a conclusion". He's the youngest of the three pitchers and has two more years of arbitration before he can become a free agent in 2021. Because shortstop Didi Gregorius will miss much of next season after surgery to fix a torn elbow ligament, Cashman is examining infield options within and outside.
