Deadly California wildfire causes "utter panic" as people try to escape

Evacuations were ordered for all communities south of US 101, including the entire city of Malibu, where the population of about 13,000 includes many celebrities.

The blaze destroyed an unknown number of structures and injured some civilians, but the extent of their injuries was not immediately known, said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Capt. John Gaddie.

Reality star Kim Kardashian, who evacuated the area with her family earlier, said on Twitter parts of the home she shares with husband Kanye West in Calabasas was destroyed.

A Southern California wildfire continues to burn homes as it runs toward the sea.

Rural areas fared little better.

McLean estimated that the lost buildings numbered in the thousands in Paradise, about 180 miles northeast of San Francisco.

The fire is already the fourth most destructive wildfire in state history, but those numbers are nearly certain to increase once officials survey the area more completely.

"This was a rapidly moving fire", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told the Chico Enterprise-Record.

They lived in an RV park in the California foothill town and were unlikely equipped to evacuate.

On Friday morning, gruesomely burned cars littered the side of the road. "Multiple cars, vehicles left in the roadway burned out".

He confirmed reports that evacuees had to abandon their vehicles as they fled the scene.

Thick gray smoke and ash filled the sky above Paradise and could be seen from miles away.

In Southern California, fire burning through wind-whipped palm trees on Thursday resembled a hurricane.

"The whole hill's on fire", she said while crying.

Some of the patients were initially turned around during their evacuation because of gridlocked traffic and later airlifted to other hospitals, along with some staff, Kinney said.

Mrs Herrera, who lives in Paradise with her 88-year-old husband Lou left a frantic voicemail to family saying they needed to get out. "They do have a auto, but they both are older and can be confused at times".

Acting Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the northern part of the state to help facilitate rescue and recovery efforts. Fanned by strong winds, it has scorched 70,000 acres (28,300 hectares) and has not been contained, the California Fire Department (Cal Fire) said.

The 101 freeway is closed as the both the Hill and Woolsey fires have jumped the freeway near Camarillo as well as in Agoura Hills near Malibu.
