The Los Angeles Dodgers and three-time Cy Young Award victor Clayton Kershaw reached an agreement on a contract extension Friday that will keep the seven-time All-Star with the club through 2021.

Hours ahead of the deadline to make a decision, the Dodgers and Kershaw mutually agreed to push it back to Friday at 1 p.m.

The left-hander gets an additional $28 million in guaranteed money.

According to The Athletic, the new deal is for three years and $93 million with incentives which brings his average annual value to $31 million now rather than the previous $32.5 million.

"I'd like to thank the Los Angeles Dodgers organization for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play for a World Series title", he wrote in part.

The three-time Cy Young victor and former MVP had until 4 p.m. Friday to opt out of the remaining two years of his contract and either test the free-agency waters or agree to a new deal with the Dodgers. The new agreement includes $4 million annually in performance bonuses based on starts, in four $1 million increments.

The shortstop officially became a free agent after the World Series ended, and there's been a great deal of speculation over whether he'll remain with the Los Angeles Dodgers for years to come. But he remains the face of the franchise and his dedicated work habits have filtered down to the younger pitchers on the staff. In 11 Major League Baseball seasons, all with the Dodgers, Kershaw is 153-69 with a 2.39 ERA. He's 9-10 with a 4.32 ERA.
