Soros funded the anti-Facebook group "Freedom From Facebook".

Facebook, in a statement Thursday, denied pushing journalists to spread misinformation.

Facebook Inc.'s board defended how Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg and Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg have handled mounting problems faced by the company, in light of a critical report by the New York Times. But to suggest that we weren't interested in knowing the truth or that we wanted to hide what we knew or that we tried to prevent investigations is simply untrue. Zuckerberg, in a conference call with reporters Thursday, repeatedly claimed he did not know that the company had been hired, trying to distinguish Facebook's culture with repeated references to "Washington D.C., firms". "We're going to get to the point where, if we're not already, we're the best at this".

On Russia, Zuckerberg declared in the fall of 2016 that it was "crazy" to think Facebook had been used to help Donald Trump win the U.S. presidency, but the report said in-house experts knew this not to be the case.

"Facebook is violating its most fundamental mission of building human connection, as well as the trust placed in it by billions of people, by advancing extremist far-right conspiracy theories that are aimed at denigrating Jews and belittling people of color", said Color of Change president Rashad Robinson.

I was shocked to learn from the New York Times that you and your colleagues at Facebook hired a Republican opposition research firm to stir up animus toward George Soros.

The social network said it is making strides in proactively identifying hate speech, saying it's able to remove the majority of posts before users report them.

The composition of the appeals body along with how to keep it independent while remaining in line with Facebook principles and policies was to be determined in the coming year.

"The entire discussion around Facebook's disclosures of what happened in 2016 is very frustrating. I failed to prepare my employer for the disinformation campaign and that is on me".

Mark Zuckerberg is Jewish.

While Mr. Zuckerberg has conducted a public apology tour in the previous year, Ms. Sandberg has overseen an aggressive lobbying campaign to combat Facebook's critics, shift public anger toward rival companies and ward off damaging regulation.

According to the report, Sandberg oversaw an aggressive lobbying campaign to counter the public backlash against the company, following an onslaught of scandals involving Russian misinformation, privacy violations and the viral spread of hateful messages.

The accusations were made by Open Society Foundations, a non-profit group founded by Mr Soros, following an investigation into Facebook's alleged use of underhand and aggressive tactics created to divert attention away from its own scandals.

Later on Wednesday, Patrick Gaspard, the head of Soros's philanthrophic Open Society Foundations, issued a statement addressed to Sandberg, as shared on Twitter, calling the alleged practice "reprehensible" and asking for an in-person meeting.

The world's most popular social media platform has been on the back foot for months, including over the allegation that data from millions of Facebook users was abused by the consultancy Cambridge Analytica to help drive Donald Trump to the White House.

Meanwhile, Facebook has fielded questions from lawmakers as to whether it is silencing conservative voices.
