Tens of thousands flee fast-moving Northern California fire

Hundreds of miles south, authorities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties have ordered the evacuation of 75,000 homes, as a wildfire bears down on the beach town of Malibu.
Butte County Fire Chief Darren Read said there were multiple injuries among civilians and firefighters. As of CalFire's latest updates, neither of the two southern blazes were even partially contained, and the Ventura County Fire Department announced that it would be deploying tactical aircraft to battle the fires "as wind and smoke conditions allow". "It was the event we have feared for a long time", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said at a press conference. "We're doing everything we can to get people out of the affected areas". "And if you've been told to go, get out of there". Several evacuation centers were set up in nearby towns. "People started getting out of their vehicles and running". After an hour of no movement, she abandoned the truck and made a decision to try her luck on foot. Some crashed and others left their vehicles by the roadside. "They were abandoned because traffic was so bad, backed up for hours".

Thick grey smoke and ash filled the sky above Paradise and could be seen from miles away.
A red flag warning is in effect in the area, meaning Thursday will bring 20-to-40-mph winds and low humidity that threaten to spread the wildfire.
At the hospital with the stranded patients, some buildings caught fire and were damaged, but the main facility, Adventist Health Feather River Hospital, was not, spokesperson Jill Kinney said.
Wind gusts of 50 to 70 miles per hour (80 to 113 kph) were expected in the mountains of Ventura County and up to 50 miles per hour in the valleys and coastal areas of the county, the NWS said.
Four of the hospital's employees were briefly trapped in the basement and rescued by California Highway Patrol officers, Kinney said.

"We're just hoping that our brand new home that we were hoping to move into tomorrow is not burned to the ground", Winstead said.
"I just wonder how many people didn't make it, and how many older folks and people with children in their cars didn't make it", she said.
With fires burning in both Northern and Southern California, the director of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services put the number of people forced from their homes at 157,000.
Nine people were declared dead and 150,000 evacuated as fierce wildfires raged across the western USA state of California, with one rapidly spreading blaze threatening the famed resort of Malibu.
A wildfire is hopscotching across a northern California county at a rate of roughly 80 football fields per minute, forcing evacuations, injuring residents and firefighters, and sending families racing from their homes. The site also reported that the fire was burning on the property of Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West. Kardashian West later tweeted that the flames had died down, and expressed gratitude to firefighters.
