Microsoft Word users are already able to add notes to their documents using the comments feature, which serves as a placeholder for inserting more content into it. While you're typing away and hit a roadblock or remember something else that needs tending to, all you have to do is, "type TODO: finish this section or ," and Word will track and add each to a to-do list.
When you come back to the document, you'll see a list of your remaining to-dos, and you can click each one to navigate back to the right spot.
This week, Microsoft announced new AI features in Word that will help you create an in-platform to-do list where you can invite others to help out without ever breaking your writing mojo. For now, if you want to take advantage of the AI-free to-do list feature, you'll need to be a member of the Office Insiders "Fast" ring. The organization is trying another component in its word processor that will consequently identify notes and messages left for yourself as well as other people and transform them into actionable lists.
"Word sends them a notification with a "deep link" to the relevant place in the document".
Tagged users can reply to the notification with their contribution, and it'll be inserted directly into the document. Microsoft says its research shows Word users leave placeholders in a document to remind them where they are. "You will be able to pick from the results and insert content from another document with a single click", the company said.
Microsoft will eventually integrate with artificial intelligence models to help fill in placeholders.
Microsoft has been bringing several new AI-powered features to its Office apps in recent months, such as the new Ideas feature that can now provide intelligent suggestions to users working on Excel documents. In the future - Microsoft didn't say when - it'll release these feature on the web, Mac, and Windows for Office 365 customers.
