Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker is expected to oversee the special counsel's investigation into potential coordination between the president's Republican campaign and Russian Federation now that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has resigned.

According to two people familiar with the discussions who spoke to CBS' Major Garrett, the list of possible replacements will continue to grow over the next several days.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called on Whitaker to recuse himself over his previous statements and Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler said the House Judiciary Committee would investigate Session's firing once he assumes the chairmanship in January.

Politico noted that Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Sen. The president may also decide to instruct Mr Whitaker to fire the entire Mueller team - something Mr Trump says he has the power to do.

"Dear Mr. President, at your request I am submitting my resignation", he wrote.

Whitaker has made no public comment since being named, but he has previously shown distinct scepticism about the probe, including calling for its scope to be curtailed.

For his part, US Senator Cory Gardner, of Colorado, said on Tuesday that he's looking forward to "continuing to work with the President to fulfill his campaign position to leave the regulation of marijuana to the states". Joni Ernst (R-IA), telling the Des Moines Register, "I'm 100 percent pro-life". "In fact, Mr Whitaker told CNN a year ago that a future attorney general could limit Mueller by reducing the budget so low that his investigations grinds to nearly a halt".

Trump's relentless attacks on Sessions came even though the Alabama Republican was the first US senator to endorse Trump and despite the fact his crime-fighting agenda and priorities, particularly his hawkish immigration enforcement policies, largely mirrored the president's.

Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special counsel's Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation. "The notification to Congress is mostly about transparency". For 18 months Rosenstein has allowed Mueller a generous budget and very broad mandate.

Marijuana reform advocates have generally applauded the announcement of Sessions' resignation, as the now former attorney general has a long history of demeaning cannabis consumers, disregarding research about the benefits of medical marijuana, and upholding federal prohibition. No one faced more rumors of an imminent dismissal than Sessions.

Sessions, who likely suspected his ouster was imminent, was spotted by reporters giving some of his grandchildren a tour of the White House over the weekend.
