Amal received the 2018 UNCA Global Citizen of the Year honor at the ceremony, which honors journalists and outlets for coverage of the United Nations and U.N. agencies.

On Wednesday, Clooney gave a speech at the United Nations Correspondents Association Awards in New York City. In it, she addressed the ongoing attack on journalists - and placed much of the blame squarely on Trump.

She lamented a rising resentment toward journalists across the globe, including by "autocratic regimes from North Korea, to Philippines to Hungary, Turkey and Brazil", USA Today reported.

"The US president has given [autocratic] regimes a green light, and labeled the press in this country an enemy of the people", Clooney said.

CNN offices in NY evacuated after bomb threat
Just two months ago, bombs were sent to the CNN, as well as top Democrats like Barack Obama and the Clintons. Don Lemon , who was on the air when the threat forced the abrupt end of his show, also tweeted out the news.

Clooney referred to the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi two months ago at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

"You are being jailed at a higher rate than ever", Clooney said.

It was here as a keynote speaker she spoke of the #MeToo movement and President Donald Trump's recent comments about Professor Christine Blasey.

The International human rights lawyer and modern-day princess arrived at the gala in a navy and crème-colored silk J. Mendel gown (shop a similar style here), which she paired with eye-catching dangling earrings and her signature red lip.
