Derek Fisher, still beloved in Los Angeles as a Lakers' point guard who helped the team to five championships, has been named the head coach of the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks.

National Basketball Association champion and former NY Knicks head coach Derek Fisher is back in the coaching ranks. That being said, Fisher's a midseason firing after compiling a 40-96 record in one-plus seasons marred his tenure in NY.

The Sparks announced last week that Brian Agler resigned as coach after four seasons with the team. Agler led Los Angeles to back-to-back WNBA Finals appearances, including winning the 2016 WNBA title.

Fisher, 44, helped the Los Angeles Lakers win five National Basketball Association titles during his 18-season playing career and served as president of the players' union.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Fisher will officially be introduced at a press conference on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles.

This is the first-time he has been a coach of a WNBA franchise. "I look forward to working with someone with championship pedigree and who has a track record of strong leadership".

"I am thrilled to name Derek Fisher our next head coach", Sparks Executive Vice President and General Manager Penny Toler said.
