William "Bill" Barr, a former attorney general under President George H.W. Bush, is emerging as a consensus candidate to succeed Jeff Sessions as attorney general, two sources familiar with President Donald Trump's thinking tell CNN.

If confirmed by the Senate, Barr would succeed Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was forced out by Trump in November and who infuriated the president by stepping aside from the Russian Federation investigation.

"I did not know him until recently when I went through the process of looking at people", Mr. Trump said.

Under Bush 41, Barr was a hardliner on crime, advocating for expanding state and federal prison systems.

Barr has worked in the private sector since serving as attorney general from 1991 to 1993, retiring from Verizon Communications (VZ.N) in 2008.

Mr. Barr, 68, is a former general counsel and executive vice president of Verizon Communications who works now as a lawyer at the firm of Kirkland & Ellis. At the time, White House officials said Trump was in no rush to nominate a permanent successor to Sessions, whom he fired November 7.

Before that, he also served as deputy attorney general and assistant attorney general overseeing the Office of Legal Counsel.

NASA space probe reaches asteroid deemed potential threat to Earth
It's not a matter of if, but when. "The OSIRIS-REx team is proud to cross another major milestone off our list-asteroid arrival". It took a little over two years and more than two billion kilometers of cruising, but NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft made it .

To that end, in reference to the Uranium One deal that gave a Russian state-backed firm control of 20% of USA uranium production, Barr said there is more of a reason to look into that deal than possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign.

The presidents' aides had previously floated the idea of Barr retaking his post in the Justice Department, sources said, with an announcement expected next week.

Rove noted Barr respects Mueller, who led the FBI's criminal division when the former was AG under Bush.

Trump heavily derided Mueller's team earlier this year for being comprised of many registered Democrats and Democratic donors. Barr was one tough lawyer. "I would have liked to see him have more balance on this group", he said in July 2017.

At least one other contender who has received serious consideration from the White House, according to the person, is Rep. John Ratcliffe, a Texas Republican.

In a 2017 opinion piece for the Post, Mr Barr said Mr Trump had been right to fire FBI director James Comey because he "crossed a line" by announcing the outcome of the investigation into Mrs Clinton's emails.
