Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and his wife, novelist MacKenzie Bezos, made a surprise announcement on Wednesday that they would split after 25 years together.

The couple have also acquired at least five homes in California, Washington state, Texas, Washington D.C. and NY throughout their 25-year marriage.

Jeff Bezos is ranked at the top of most lists of the world's wealthiest people, and his fortune now hovers around $US137 billion, according to estimates by both Forbes and Bloomberg.

Jeff and MacKenzie met when they worked at hedge fund D.E. Shaw, and married in 1993.

"During a blockbuster four-month investigation, The ENQUIRER tracked Bezos, who turns 55 on January 12, and secret lover Sanchez across five states and 64,000, tailed them in private jets, swanky limos, helicopter rides, romantic hikes, five-star hotel hideaways, intimate dinner dates and "quality time" in hidden love nests", the National Enquirer wrote in a story teasing its upcoming investigation.

Amazon is still gaining market share in 2019, Piper Jaffray analysts said in a note this week.

Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos met in NY at D.E. Shaw.

Amazon Vice President of Corporate Communications Drew Herdener told in a statement: "Jeff remains focused on and engaged in all aspects of Amazon".

Not only are they giving him a great salary, but he is able to work in both New Japan Pro Wrestling along with his Cruise. He said that he wouldn't have signed if there wasn't a strong TV deal on the table.

MacKenzie, an author, played a significant role at the company in the early years and "was there when he wrote the business plan", she wrote in a disparaging 2013 review of a Bezos biography written by Bloomberg Senior Executive Editor Brad Stone.

Jeff has previously said that MacKenzie's support was instrumental when he founded Amazon as an online bookseller in 1994, and that she actually did the accounting for the company in its first year.

The divorce could reshape the wealth rankings. If not, it's not out of the realm of possibility that the two would split their massive fortune.

Washington, where the couple resides, is a community property state, which means that all assets and debts accrued during the marriage are considered owned equally by both spouses unless there was a prenuptial agreement stating otherwise.

In 2012, the couple donated US$2.5 million to a Washington state campaign to legalise same-sex marriage there. "The two of them are sort of thick as thieves right now". Meanwhile Bezos revealed on Wednesday that he and his wife have been going through a "trial separation".

Today, they own five houses across the USA, in Medina, Washington, Beverly Hills, Van Horn, Texas, D.C., and Manhattan.

However, this is not where all the news ends. He declined to comment on how the divorce might affect the ownership stake.
