"I'm excited to see what he'll do, because he's a very enthusiastic coach and he's a very good communicator", said general manager Scott Layden, who was hired by Thibodeau, also the president of basketball operations, and faces an uncertain future with the club.

And Saunders, the son of the late Timberwolves coaching legend Flip Saunders, will be the leader players look to make that run happen. Saunders supplants Los Angeles Lakers head coach Luke Walton (38), and has turned a career as a former player at the University of Minnesota and assistant with the Washington Wizards and Timberwolves into a surprising head coaching role at such a fresh age. "I think (Saunders) is going to be great. If we want to make the playoffs this year, I have to make a move, '" Hine explained. "Maybe one of those games".

"The results are that I don't think we should've lost against Phoenix or Detroit or New Orleans or Atlanta", Taylor said.

Taylor said he was "just looking at the results".

European Union sanctions more Iranians
Samuelsen said that some European Union countries were "hesitant" Tuesday about the move due to the nuclear deal with Iran. The Iranian government has denied any involvement in the killings of the two opponents of the regime.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski says the Timberwolves have interest in Hoiberg as a potential head coach or GM. Hoiberg was recently fired by the Chicago Bulls and was in Minnesota as a player from 2003-05.

Minnesota has now parted ways with Thibodeau and Jimmy Butler over the last two months. The Timberwolves have made yet another change, this time firing basketball boss Tom Thibodeau right before the midpoint of the season and giving 32-year-old Ryan Saunders a 42-game audition as the interim coach. Thibodeau and Minnesota's front office eventually sent him to the 76ers in mid-November in exchange for a package centered around Robert Covington and Dario Saric.

Thibodeau was also the head coach of the Bulls from 2011-15, where he compiled a 255-139 record.

"You really don't get much sleep, getting thrown into this thing", Saunders said Tuesday morning, January 8, at the Timberwolves' shootaround.
