To make sure this doesn't happen again, Microsoft needs a certain amount of "reserved storage" for future updates.

Microsoft introduced this Storage Reserve (as it is also known) to "ensure proper performance and successful updates of your device", but not everyone is happy about it. Microsoft explains that you can reduce the size of reserved storage by reducing the number of Optional Features and languages you have installed. Most likely, KB4476976 is a preview of the fixes that will become available soon for everyone.

Today, Microsoft has rolled out another build for the Windows Insider users in the Fast Ring.

"On Microsoft Windows 10 systems that have limited storage space (often, thin clients or embedded systems), when you run Windows Update, the update process may display an error message due to insufficient storage space", Microsoft stated in a recent support document.

Everyone can think what they want to think, but we are just seeing what happens during the game". Match of the Day pundit Wright said: "It's really worrying".

Reserved Storage facilitates updates to existing applications, as well as OS updates. The reserved storage functionality is an attempt by the company to solve the woes arising out of the installation.

Microsoft's decision to earmark several gigabytes for future updates and temporary files should make things go smoother, in some cases. The new user interface will require less clicks / taps and should be more consistent with the overall theme, regardless of the device now in use. In October, for instance, Microsoft announced that it was dropping the delivery of print drivers with Windows 10 feature updates as a space-saving measure, starting with Windows 10 version 1809. Normally, Windows will shift all the temporary files to the reserved space. The reserved space isn't entirely lost during normal usage, with certain temporary files having their disk usage charged against reserved space rather than free space.

Many Windows 10 machines, such as laptops, have been equipped with relatively small solid-state drives as a cost-saving measure.
