In 2016, Bafta announced that, in order to qualify in two of its award categories - outstanding British film, and outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer - films must conform to the BFI's Diversity Standards.

Asked at the film festival about sexual abuse allegations against Singer, which were not cited as the reason for the director's firing, Malek said his heart goes out to all victims of such abuse.

"In light of recent very serious allegations, BAFTA has informed Bryan Singer that his nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody has been suspended, effective immediately", the British Academy said in a statement.

Nominees for best British film - a separate category - are Channel Islands thriller Beast, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, fashion documentary McQueen, Laurel and Hardy biopic Stan and Ollie and crime thriller You Were Never Really Here. This year, costume drama The Favourite is set to dominate the awards, having garnered 12 nominations including for Best Film. BAFTA notes Mr. Singer's denial of the allegations. While not getting into specifics, BAFTA stressed that it considers Singer's alleged behavior "completely unacceptable and incompatible with its values". "The suspension of his nomination will therefore remain in place until the outcome of the allegations has been resolved". King and McCarten remain nominated, while Bohemian Rhapsody will also contest a further six BAFTA Awards. Validity of the above story is for 7 Days from original date of publishing. The awards are this Sunday in London.

The director faces accusations of sexual assault, which he has denied.

"BAFTA has removed Bryan Singer's name from "Bohemian Rhapsody's" British Film nomination.after voting has closed, natch".
