Dortmund will face Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League Round of 16 later this month.

Belfodil beat a crowd of defenders to connect with Dennis Geiger's cross and head in an 87th-minute goal that saw Dortmund fail to capitalise on Borussia Monchengladbach's 3-0 loss at home to Hertha Berlin.

Dortmund, which drew at Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend, was missing coach Lucien Favre due to illness, and with Reus also out due to a muscular injury in Tuesday's German Cup exit to Werder Bremen, there were fears of a tough game against old rival Hoffenheim, which is fighting for European qualification.

Jadon Sancho scored his first goal of 2019 and his seventh of the season as the home side dominated the first half and he was instrumental when Mario Gotze struck.

"It doesn't have to come tomorrow, it doesn't have to come in two years' time, but eventually it will come". Schalke dropped to 13th on 22 points, seven above the relegation zone.

Jadon Sancho, in the absence of Dortmund captain Marco Reus, took control for the hosts in the first half, firing them ahead and slicing through the hapless Hoffenheim defence at will.

Sancho nearly got a second goal in the 75th but his low shot hit the post and bounced clear - before the hosts went up the other end and scored through Ishak Belfodil.

Belfodil kicked off the comeback in the 75th minute when he seized on a cross by Czech defender Pavel Kaderabek to narrow the gap.

"It was insane how many clubs wanted me - it shows how well you're doing, but I always felt Dortmund was right for me", Sancho summed up.

German daily newspaper Rehr Nachrichten posted footage to their Twitter page of Sancho being let through security at Dortmund Aiport to join the rest of the team. "When you lead 3-0 at home and then you play a 3-3 then it obviously is extremely bitter", Goetze told reporters.

The ratings for these players could have been so much higher if the final 20 minutes never happened, with that in mind here are the payer ratings for the Borussia Dortmund players.
