The drama took the top prize of Best Film, as well as the honors for Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography.

It won out against "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson's "They Shall Not Grow Old" in which silent black-and-white footage from World War I was transformed into a 3D color movie. "I'm very happy that they're embracing diversity.in a time in which the theatrical experience had become so gentrified", Cuaron said on the red carpet about Netflix.

"The thing I really want to do is Emma and Rachel-I must keep it together-not just for your performances but for what you did after the cameras stopped rolling", Colman said. "And what is very needed is a balance between the two economic models - the theatres and the (streaming) platforms, because that's only going to be good for cinema".

As well as winning the gong for Outstanding British Film, Original Screenplay, Costume Design, Production Design and Make Up and Hair, Olivia took home the award for Leading Actress.

"We're having an incredible night aren't we", Colman told her fellow "The Favourite" nominees as she picked up the award.

She made her directorial debut with " Kochadaiiyaan ", in which her father starred, apart from founding Ocher Picture Productions. The video shows the actor breaking into an impromptu jig on the tunes of the song 'Oruvan Oruvan Mudhalali' from his film Muthu .

This year's leading actress category is similarly competitive, featuring Glenn Close for "The Wife", Lady Gaga for "A Star Is Born", Melissa McCarthy for "Can You Ever Forgive Me?", Olivia Colman for "The Favourite" and Viola Davis for "Widows".

"As far as I'm concerned, all three of us are the same and should be the lead.This is for all three of us". It's weird. but this is for all three of us.

The film - directed by Yorgos Lanthimos - picked up a total of seven awards on the night, but its biggest win was for Colman in the lead role. It's got my name on it but we can scratch in some others.

Bafta winners Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz have been hailed as LGBT heroes after proclaiming their support for the community on the red carpet before Sunday's awards show.

Bradley Cooper picked up the Original Music prize for A Star Is Born, while Adapted Screenplay went to Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman.
