"This is disrespectful to my entire city". As one social media user explained, "The irony of the very sexy J.Lo Motown revue is that [Motownrecord executive] Berry Gordy had the women of Motown tame their sexy so as to not fall into the Jezebel, highly sexed trope which White America places black women in!"
"They really got JLo lip syncing Motown's finest songs like there's not 1000 black women with R&B vocals ready for this moment #GRAMMMYs".
There will be full Motown tribute show titled "Motown 60: A GRAMMY Celebration." which will be taped February 12 but air April 21 on CBS.
In response to the criticism, Motowntweeted and then deleted a statement in defense of Lopez. Jennifer, though, is taking it all in her stride. "#MotownDidItFirst", the post read.
Jennifer Lopez performed a medley of Motown classics at the 2019 Grammy Awards on Sunday, belting out a number of old favorites like "Dancing in the Street", "Do You Love Me", "The Things in Life are Free" and more. They argued the Grammys should've chosen an African American singer. "You gotta do what's in your heart", Lopez shared in her defense. "But for some people, [it wasn't], and that's okay. We were The Temptations and we [would] just sing with her and I feel it's a dream come true".
"I don't think anyone who is intelligent is upset. Everybody", he said. "Who's stupid enough to protest Jennifer Lopez doing anything for Motown?". As TooFab noted, not only is Lopez not black but her own music style is nothing like Motown's sound. Motown churned out Black artist after Black artist who became icons of music in a time when Black people were combating overt racism on the daily.
