Westbrook is the modern triple-double king, breaking Oscar Robertson's mark for most in a season (42) and becoming the first player to average a triple-double for an entire season since Robertson in 1962 (following it up by averaging a triple-double again last season and now again this season).

Westbrook finished with 21 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists to break the record in a 120-111 win over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Chamberlain's record of nine consecutive triple-doubles had stood for 51 years before Westbrook eclipsed the National Basketball Association legend.

He downplayed this record while still showing respect for Chamberlain.

"I'm just excited for Russell", George said during his post-game on court interview. "It's what I do". I go out and compete every night and leave it on the floor. "I'm very, very blessed to be able to go out and play, and I don't take it for granted".

"I thought he had it already", George joked. "I didn't know it was that close". Oklahoma City is 9-1 in the span. "That's what he's about. I've got all the confidence in him". He finished the night shooting 60 percent from 3-point range (3-of-5). Rookie Deonte Burton had a career-high 18 points and Raymond Felton added a season-high 15 for the Thunder. With 45 points against James Harden and the Houston Rockets on Saturday, George has scored 92 points in his past two tilts.

Oklahoma City is third in the West at 36-19.

Westbrook received a standing ovation from those in attendance at Chesapeake Energy Arena after dishing out his 10th assist in the game, and it was fitting that the feat occurred in Oklahoma City. He got his first assist of the quarter with 6:54 left and was up to his ninth with 4:57 to play.

As for whether or not Westbrook felt any pressure to help George in that spot?

"It was special from the second the ball was tipped off", said George.

"To go out an compete, we are truly thankful to the man above for blessing me and going out and playing the game I love". But he told me the situation. Oscar Robertson is the only other player in league history to have averaged a triple-double throughout a season.

Westbrook figured he might as well get a different kind of assist.
