Numerous teens asking on social media how to get vaccinations on their own are often looking for information on the Mature Minor Doctrine.

Lindenberger showed his parents scientific studies that showed vaccines were safe and effective, but his mother remained unconvinced.

"God knows how I'm still alive", Lindenberger wrote in a post on Reddit in November. I haven't got vaccines since elementary school, Dad fell down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole, and my Mom agrees with him. His friends were getting vaccinated. "It was like him spitting on me", she told the site, "saying 'You don't know anything, I don't trust you with anything". "I had grown up hearing that and when I started to move on to social media, you know, 13, 14, there was very online heated debate".

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says this is a long-standing myth due to the fact that several children who die of SIDS occur during the age range that they receive their DTaP shots. "And it went from nearly completely eradicated, to the numbers were shooting, sky-rocketing back up, from immunizations".

Fatherly points out that even if health care providers were legally able to provide minors with vaccines behind their parents' backs, "in most cases it would get billed to the parent's insurance, likely (causing) conflict between the child and their families".

His older sister was vaccinated and his older brother was partially vaccinated, but when his mother discovered she could opt out of the practice, she chose not to vaccinate her younger five children.

Why do some parents choose not to vaccinate their children?

Washington state has been facing a measles outbreak with more than 50 cases.

An estimated 7.9% of Clark County, Washington, kindergartners in the 2017-18 school year were unvaccinated, with most of those kids' parents citing non-medical reasons for refusing vaccines.

In 2015, at least 95 cases of measles were reported nationwide by the end of January.

People who have previously had the infection do not need immunization.

"The picture for 2018 makes it clear that the current pace of progress in raising immunization rates will be insufficient to stop measles circulation". Of these, approximately 500,000 cases were reported each year to CDC; of these, 400 to 500 died, 48,000 were hospitalized, and 1,000 developed encephalitis (brain swelling) from measles.

The best way to prevent the measles is to get the MMR vaccine.
