Lady Gaga - who will be performing tonight without Bradley Cooper, who is in Britain, attending the BAFTAs - won best song written for visual media for, of course, "Shallow" from A Star Is Born.

Janelle Monae's Dirty Computer, country singer Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour, Carlile's By The Way, I Forgive You, newcomer H.E.R's self-titled H.E.R., and the Black Panther soundtrack round out contenders for album of the year.

Gaga, who is to perform later on Sunday, said on Twitter she was "in tears with honour and gratitude".

"I've got nothing to say, I'm speechless", she said.

The 61st annual Grammys Awards will be held on 10 February at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The Grammy Awards kicked off Sunday with a group of powerful women, including Michelle Obama and Lady Gaga, describing the role of music in their lives - a display that came a year after female voices were somewhat muted at the 2018 ceremony. This marks yet another rough year for the Grammys.

To help combat the Grammys' much-discussed diversity problem, the Recording Academy expanded the major categories to eight nominees each - so now that the field is wider than ever, expect some upsets.

You go one goal down, and suddenly you're four down, and you don't know how. "They played really fantastic football today". We need to understand the reasons. "I am anxious about my team and I am anxious about the performance".

One fan wrote, "the fact that bts were even nominated shows how big they are please let's not be discouraged and let's aim to get them an award next year I know we can do it today showed us that bts are capable of anything let's keep it up and we will get them an award next year!"

Six of the best new artist nominees are women, including H.E.R., Chloe x Halle, Margo Price, Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha and Jorja Smith.

Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich told the Associated Press that Grande, who is nominated for best pop vocal performance and best pop vocal album, declined to perform Sunday because she "felt it was too late for her to pull something together".

Just days before the event, she slammed the ceremony's producer for "lying" about her decision not to perform on music's biggest night. "I hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more".

Grande is nominated for two awards and could miss the chance of giving a speech onstage if she wins. Audiences can watch the show on CBS All Access, which offers a seven-day free trial. Taylor Swift, who was snubbed and one scored one nomination, also won't be at the show.

Some complained that a black artist should be involved in the tribute, while others said stronger vocalists should perform over Lopez.

"When they don't take home the big prize", he said, "the regard of the academy, and what the Grammys represent, continues to be less meaningful to the hip-hop community, which is sad".
