"I am pleased to announce that Kelly Knight Craft, our current Ambassador to Canada, is being nominated to be United States Ambassador to the United Nations", he tweeted late Friday afternoon.

President Trump is nominating Kelly Knight Craft as the new US ambassador to the United Nations.

The announcement comes a week after Trump's first choice to replace Nikki Haley at the United Nations, the former Fox News host and state department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, withdrew her candidacy.

Back in December, Trump said he would nominate State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert but her name was never officially sent to the Senate for confirmation.

Her perspective on the issue is likely colored by her husband's business as a billionaire coal magnate.

ZIMBABWE CRISIS: New currency launched as MILLIONS plunged into poverty

Craft made headlines late previous year when she gave a "both sides" response when pressed to say whether she believes the scientific consensus that humans are responsible for climate change.

She answered: "I believe there are scientists on both sides that are accurate".

Craft, a top Republican donor from Kentucky, rose this week as a serious contender for the post based on a recommendation by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a fellow Kentuckian.

McConnell, a Kentucky native like Craft, issued a statement calling her an "exceptional choice".
