Mauro Icardi's future at Inter Milan has been cast in doubt after he refused to travel with the Serie A club on their trip to Rapid Vienna after being stripped of the club captaincy.

Inter confirmed the news on Twitter, simply stating: "The Club can confirm that Samir Handanovic is the new Inter captain".

Spalletti said: 'The decision to remove the captaincy from Icardi was hard and painful, absolutely shared by all the club members and taken for the good of Inter.

Capello has questioned how Icardi can carry on at Inter while his agent and wife Wanda Nara continues to snipe in public at management and also his teammates.

'He was called up for Vienna but he did not want to be there. "Obviously he was disappointed, but there are things going on which are disturbing him and the team".

Recently, she has been talking about the negotiations surrounding the renewal of his contract at the San Siro.

Manager Luciano Spalletti addressed the media reports of a fallout with the former FC Barcelona trainee this weekend after their victory over Parma.

Despite netting nine goals in the first 13 Serie A matches of the season, Icardi is goalless in the last seven games, which is his longest drought since joining the club, and Inter fear that this contract stand-off is beginning to impact his performances on the pitch. He needs to free himself from the talk that is around him.

"I have not created any problems for Icardi", Spalletti told DAZN.

The situation became more unclear when Nara, speaking on the Tiki Taka show, said: "I would like Mauro to be more protected by the club because sometimes some bad things come from inside".
