Police said four men - three security guards and a patron waiting to get in - were shot outside the Love Machine club in the trendy inner-city suburb of Prahran early Sunday morning.

Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper, from the Homicide Squad, said no stone would be left unturned in the bid to find those responsible.

Australian media reported that the shooter, who is believed to be on the run, apparently fired from a auto as it was passing by the Love Machine nightclub, which was hosting a night for "old school groovers". "For some of you it was a night out, the rest of the Love Machine family lost a lovely soul today", he wrote.

Chapel Street was home to a number of popular nightclubs and the shooting on Sunday occurred while many people were still out.

Police were expected to provide updates later Sunday.

Their focus seemed to centre around bloodstained clothing left lying in the middle of the road alongside bullet casings outside the entrance of the second storey nightclub.

Local resident Edie said the shooting was rare for the neighbourhood.
