Witnesses told police that the 24-year-old suspect took off running immediately after pushing the child.

Cops were called to the mall, in Bloomington, around 10:15 a.m. Friday after the child landed on first floor, Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts said at a news conference.

The man, later identified by police as Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, ran from the scene but was arrested in the mall's transit station.

Potts said the incident was isolated - that Aranda and child had not known each other prior - and that investigators are "actively trying to figure out why this occurred ... whether it was an interaction up on the floor or why that is".

Police in Minnesota say a 5-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries when he was pushed or thrown from a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America.
