A Fordham University student who died trying to get a photograph for social media posted a final video on Snapchat minutes before plunging to her death inside a clock tower.

The circumstances of her fall were not immediately available, police said. The 22-year-old and her friends reportedly climbed the tower's stairs in the Bronx, roughly 3 a.m. Sunday morning, and was later rushed to the hospital after getting critically injured.

The university is now investigating how the students gained access to the tower.

One student, identified only as Anne, told the U.S. publication she believed Ms Monfries had climbed the tower with several other students when the tragedy occurred.

In 2013, a school official told the Fordham Ram that the tower was "rather dangerous" and therefore "off limits" to students.

The senior continued, "I think they were posting on Instagram when it happened".

A criminal complaint says in one case, he was suspected of "throwing things off the upper level of the mall to the lower level". Potts believes this most recent incident is isolated and said the Mall of America continues to be a very safe place to go.

The university said authorized school officials "have sometimes given tours of the tower, in part to satisfy students' curiosity about it, and reduce the likelihood that they would attempt to enter the structure without authorization".

"It's like a senior thing to go on the most popular building on campus", said Priscilla Morales, a psychology student, told the Times. "If it is, it's kind of stupid", junior Linda Yenicag said. "He told me some seniors (wanted to go) to the tower to take some pictures and have a good time before graduating". Her family has been notified but her name was not yet released. "If he wasn't there, I don't know, she might have been worse off", he said.

According to USA media reports, Ms Monfries slipped on her way up the tower's spiral staircase and was found by emergency services at about 3.17am.

Sydney Monfries was rushed to hospital in "extremely critical condition" after falling 40ft from a bell tower. "Theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief".

School president Joseph McShane confirmed the tragic news in a letter to students later that evening.
