In a bout featuring a pair of unlikely combatants, 19-year-old rookie Andrei Svechnikov was knocked out in a first-period fight by 33-year-old Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin.

It was the fourth pro fight for Ovechkin, and the first since 2010.

Capitals stars not on the ice banged their sticks against the barrier in support of their fearless leader, who was taken to the penalty box while Svechnikov lay on the ice in a daze. The rookie player remained sprawled out for a spell before being escorted off by his team's trainers.

Both players received 5-minute fighting majors.

Ovechkin's Washington Capitals now lead their first round playoff series with the Carolina Hurricanes 2-0.

Svechnikov struggled to get to his feet after the fight and was helped off the ice by Hurricanes staff.

Barcelona v Manchester United
United have scored only once at home in five European games, but they have proven to be better away from home. You create chances but you have to take them: that is why the best strikers are the expensive ones.

"I'm not a big fighter, and he's the same", Ovechkin said.

Linesman Scott Cherrey pulls Alex Ovechkin off of Andrei Svechnikov during the first period. You don't want to see a guy get hurt or something. So it's a little bit frustrating because he got hurt. "We just have to forget about it and move forward".

Tempers flared enough for Ovechkin to indulge in just the fourth fight of his career, and first since almost a decade ago, according to HockeyFights.com. That brawl was called to an end by referees when the duo tumbled to the ice.

Brind'Amour said the 19-year-old Svechnikov went to the hosptial for an assessment after Carolina's Game 3 win in the first round of the National Hockey League playoffs. And the first Russian fight in more than 20 years. He asked me to fight and I said, 'let's go, yeah.' I hope he's ok. And that's Ovi, not our guy. He's never fought in his life, and I'm pretty sure Ovi knew that.

Last night's (Mon., April 15, 2019) Stanley Cup Playoffs series between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes got very interesting. So that stuff bothers me.
