The Old Lady were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-final stage by surprise package Ajax, a disappointment considering their designs on the trophy and the recruitment of the superstar Portuguese.

Surprise package Atalanta climbed to third with 65 points thanks to a 2-1 home win over relegation-threatened Genoa.

The win left Roma sixth on 62 points, behind AC Milan on their head-to-head record, with two games left.

Placed on number six of the Serie A table, Roma needed a victory at this juncture of the tournament. "Even if not everything depends on us, we have to get to the end with a clear conscience". Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had put Juventus ahead when he collected Dybala's pass before running on to slot the ball past Mirante but he was fractionally offside.

But Roma captain Florenzi, perhaps annoyed by Ronaldo who had just made fun of his size, turned things around when he picked up a Dzeko cross to break the deadlock.

"I did not know about it", he said before repeating his usual criticism of the probe and special counsel Robert Mueller. Wray's testimony to a Senate panel stood in contrast with comments made by Attorney General William P.

Torino missed a penalty but fought back to beat Sassuolo 3-2.

Belotti nearly scored after the break but Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli denied his overhead kick.

Empoli kept their hopes of Serie A survival alive with a 2-1 win at Sampdoria.

Diego Farias and Giovanni Di Lorenzo scored for Empoli before Fabio Quagliarella converted a stoppage-time penalty for his 26th league goal of the season.
