Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he would have a "frank conversation" with Pompeo on Iran on Tuesday, saying he expected the top usa diplomat was pressuring the Europeans to reject Iranian overtures for relief from United States sanctions.

Before a closed-door meeting with Pompeo, Putin said he had an impression from a phone call with US President Donald Trump on May 3 that the latter is willing to restore US-Russia relations and jointly resolve issues of mutual interest.

"We stressed that it is very important in this context to provide worldwide security guarantees to North Korea in response to its steps on denuclearization", Ushakov added in comments carried by TASS News Agency.

Heads of Russian and US diplomacy on Tuesday met in the Russian coastal city of Sochi for the second time in two weeks amid hopes for improved ties between the two countries.

Russian Federation should now work with Ukraine's new president-elect to bring peace to eastern Ukraine, said Pompeo, adding that he wanted Moscow to free a group of captured Ukrainian sailors.

Putin supported the Austrian head of state, expressing confidence that the project will be implemented on time.

But, Pompeo added, the U.S. has also made it clear to Tehran that if USA interests are attacked, Washington will certainly reserve its rights to respond as it deems appropriate.

Hanging over Trump's quest for warm ties with Russian Federation have been persistent allegations that his campaign worked with the rival power to swing the 2016 election to the mogul over his rival Hillary Clinton.

Putin then brought up the special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election interference by calling it "exotic work".

"We highlighted very useful cooperation that's happening on Afghanistan, including the trio format", Lavrov said alongside Pompeo on Tuesday.

Lavrov and Pompeo are likely to talk about arms control after the USA pulled out of the INF, a key post-Cold War security treaty, and indicated its interests in a new agreement that also includes China.

"There are things Russian Federation can do to convey that these types of activities are a thing of the past and I hope they take advantage of that".

"We are saddened to see the decisions taken by the Iranian side", Peskov said, while arguing that Washington has been provoking Iran.

U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said this during his visit to Sochi on Tuesday, May 14, according to an Ukrinform correspondent.

Lavrov also said that he passed Pompeo a list of proposals that includes establishment of an expert council, consisting of former soldiers and diplomats, that would try to find solutions for existing problems.

Putin and Pompeo also discussed the crises on Iran and Venezuela.

Putin assured that there had been no Russian meddling in the USA election at the government level.

Pompeo meanwhile said he had urged Lavrov to end Russia's support for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Trump himself rejected the New York Times report, saying it was "fake news" but did not rule out deploying "a hell of a lot more" soldiers in the future.

Lavrov also denounced that the majority of the cyber attacks against this nation come from the United States.
