Sweden reopened an investigation into the rape allegation, first made in 2010, on May 13.

Ecuador's move to turn items and documents belonging to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange over to the U.S. emphasizes the power that the Trump administration can exert over the famed publisher, activist and comedian Randy Credico told Sputnik.

Assange was arrested by British authorities on April 11 and carried out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he sheltered for nearly seven years.

Assange, who is the founder of WikiLeaks, was arrested at the embassy in April and is serving a sentence in London for skipping bail, according to The Hill. He is serving a 50-week sentence in a London prison for skipping bail while the US seeks his extradition for conspiring to hack into military computers and spill secrets about USA operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

British authorities, who are now holding Assange on a 50-week sentence for jumping bail in 2012, will be in charge of deciding whether to extradite him to Sweden or the United States first, Fox News correspondent Greg Palkot reported earlier on "America's Newsroom".

Mr Assange was arrested on 11 April after being handed over to British authorities by Ecuador. A lawyer representing Australian national Assange said he will consult his client before responding to the plea. "We expected this to happen and protections have been in place for a very long time". "Thieves! Thieves! Shame on you!"

Moreno previously pledged that he would not turn Assange over to any country with the death penalty.Assange accused the Ecuadorian government of attempting to end his asylum a year ago because of new rules the embassy imposed on him, which required him to pay for medical bills and phone calls, stay away from commenting on political issues online and clean up after his pet cat.

Moreno's actions immediately were celebrated by the Trump administration, which was key in helping Ecuador secure a $4.2 billion credit line from the International Monetary Fund and has provided the tiny South American country with new trade and military deals in recent weeks.

Swedish authorities on Monday filed a request for a detention order against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is now jailed in the United Kingdom.

While a case of alleged sexual misconduct against Assange in Sweden was dropped in 2017 when the statute of limitations expired, a rape allegation remains.

The Daily Mail reported on Sunday that two human rights inspectors from the United Nations visited him earlier this month in prison without a guard present, sparking accusations that Assange is receiving special favors. Assange has denied wrongdoing, claiming the allegations were politically motivated and that the sex was consensual.

The 47-year-old whistleblower is already facing moves to extradite him to Sweden on rape charges.
