The shooting of former Red Sox star David Ortiz was coordinated by a group as big as seven men who meant to collect almost $8,000 to kill him, according to Dominican authorities. But Bautista said in a press conference Wednesday that the alleged coordinator is one of the suspects detained.

Ortiz was shot at a club in Santo Domingo and underwent emergency surgery to fix damage done by the bullet to both his intestines and his liver.

The suspects involved in the shooting of former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz got paid $7,800 for the hit, according to authorities; Steve Harrigan reports from Santo Domingo.

Dominican Republic Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez identified Ramon Martinez Perez as the man suspected of jumping off the back of a motorcycle on Sunday night and shooting Ortiz in the torso.

Ortiz was then taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition.

Among the other suspects still at large were Luis Alfredo Rivas Clase, aka The Surgeon, as well as a woman known as The Venezuelan, or Red, and two other men, prosecutors said in a statement.

Authorities have declined to discuss a possible motive.

Oliver Moisés Mirabal Acosta, who was captured Tuesday night in the town of Mao in the northern Dominican Republic, was driving a grey Hyundai Accent before mounting the bike driven by 25-year-old Eddy Vladimir Féliz Garcia, the document said.

"His condition is guarded and he will remain in the ICU for the coming days", the 43-year-old's wife, Tiffany, said. (Apparently the authorities have provided different spellings of the suspects' names.) It does not appear that the alleged shooter's lawyer has given a comment to the media.

Ortiz is recovering from his wounds in intensive care in Boston.
