He said that soon the State Pollution Control Board of Meghalaya and Assam will deliberate on how to tackle air pollution in Byrnihat to improve the air quality levels of the area. The theme for this year's celebration is "Air Pollution". Han recognized the efforts of Zhejiang Province, where the city of Hangzhou is located, in implementing a rural village reconstruction and restoration programme, which won a UN Champions of the Earth Award in 2018.

Earlier, the state's Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Envornment, Mrs. Yetunde Dina, noted that the state government has been doing its best to reduce air pollution with monitoring through taskforce.

This year's commemoration put priority on curbing air pollution, which the United Nations describes as a global environmental health hazard which results in more than seven million premature deaths in the world annually. All these, amongst several others, are contributing daily to compromise the integrity and quality of air in our environment and the country at large, thereby causing air pollution.

Ban Ki-moon, President and Chair, Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and former UN Secretary-General, remarked that air pollution can not be dealt with alone, and called on all nations to work in solidarity.

In India, for example, the government launched its comprehensive action plan to clean up air quality in Agra, where the Taj Mahal monument is located.

She listed the interventions to include the institution of an e-waste management centre to stop the burning of e-waste, the introduction of a plastic waste policy to regulate the use and disposal of plastic waste and the introduction of vehicle emission testing and standards to curb vehicular air pollution.

India has repeatedly failed to address environmental concerns.

Environmental activists have urged the Federal Government to urgently declare a state of emergency on the environment to check climate change, environmental degradation, diseases and deaths.They made the call on the sidelines of the World Environment Day, which is marked on June 5 every year.

UNEP also launched a report titled, 'Air Pollution and Human Health: The Case of the Western Balkans, ' which highlights the health impacts of poor air quality, based on a study conducted in 19 cities in the region.
