The two men planted the oak sapling in the White House grounds past year.

Macron, asked in an interview with Swiss French-language television RTS whether he would support a Merkel candidacy, said that he could not speak for her.

He added that he would send President Trump a new tree from the Belleau Wood in northern France, where more than 1,800 American soldiers died in a ferocious battle during the First World War.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel meet on the sidelines of an European Union summit in Brussels, Belgium March 21, 2019.

"The symbol was to plant it together".

It died in quarantine after being dug up.

The two heads of states had celebrated the countries' friendship by planting the oak tree together on the White House's South Lawn during Macron's state visit to the United States a year ago.

Gulf of Mexico dead zone bigger than ever
This year, the low-oxygen area is likely to cover about 7,800 square miles - roughly the size of Massachusetts, NOAA said. An oxygen-starved hypoxic zone, commonly called a dead zone and shown in red, forms each summer in the Gulf of Mexico.

News of the tree's demise emerges at a strained time for relations between America and France.

At the time, Gerard Araud, French ambassador to the USA, said the tree would be replanted following its time in quarantine.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that he would support German Chancellor Angela Merkel if she were to seek to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker as president of the European Commission.

Concerned over the security of Europe, Macron has also been critical over Trump's decision to withdraw from the decades-old Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), which banned the ground-launched missiles with a range between 500 and 5,500 kilometers.

They last met in France to mark the 75th anniversary since the D-Day landings, when Macron gave a speech that made several digs at Trump's key policies.

Macron then praised leaders of the Second World War for setting up the United Nations after the conflict.

Just over one year after the ceremonial planting, the dead tree has been viewed as a metaphor for the two leaders' atrophied relationship - one that showed promise in the beginning. "Russia is a great country that has overcome the tragedy together with us".
