He made bogey on No. 8 when he tugged a 9-iron from the middle of the fairway into the left rough.

After a double bogey at the fifth hole, Woods was able to erase his mistake with back-to-back birdies on his next two holes to get back into red numbers.

Leishman started on the 10th hole playing with four-time major victor McIlroy and Spain's Jon Rahm but the Australian world No.21 got off to a shocking start.

"Spin it that way, how lucky it was to stay in", Koepka said of the tee shot.

Then on the par-5 14th, Woods hit his second shot into the greenside bunker. "It's just a calming influence and I can kind of just take away his mentality towards these [events], and the fact that he really slows things down and calms things down even more and that works well for him".

Englishman Hatton, who recorded his best finish at a US Open when he finished joint sixth previous year, climbed to four under par without dropping a shot in his first 15 holes, but finished with three successive bogeys. In the first two Majors this year I shot 73 at Augusta and over-par at Bethpage and it's so hard to chase, especially when courses are so tough. At the 13th, he hit a wayward drive but recovered from in front of the green.

He didn't have great chances at the 15th or 16th holes, missed the green short again at 17, and then was in a bunker at 18 and couldn't get it up and down and made par.

Chris Froome to miss Tour de France after crashing during practice
L'Equipe write that Froome hit a wall during his ride, before a team official revealed the news about his fractured pelvis. Froome's Twitter account later confirmed he was undergoing surgery to fix "multiple fractures".

Woods also had a one-shot lead when he had his opening 65 in 2000, a lead he stretched to six shots after the second round, 10 shots after the third and 15 shots at the end, a record for major championships. He is 13th in that category on the PGA Tour. "You're not going to beat the scenery and everything about this golf course, and it's just the weather we're having at the moment, it makes this week really special".

Phil Mickelson makes his putt at the 10th green during the first round of the 2019 U.S. Open golf tournament at Pebble Beach Golf Links. It seemed like the majority of the guys were under par through the first seven holes, and then nobody was making hay after that. "He struggled for a little bit, fought it off and what an incredible finish". What prevented this from being better was the one hole Woods couldn't save himself on.

Fowler, who is still seeking his first major title, shot a five-under 66 to open his account.

He missed three of the past five U.S. Opens with injuries and missed the cut the last two times he played in 2015 and '18. Woods is in a tie for 28th.

"So you don't feel like that buzz that you would on a Sunday, but you can't help but look around over your shoulder, and damn, this is Pebble Beach".

Graeme McDowell saw the score when he walked off the 10th green at the start of his round and quipped to his caddie, "All the USGA radios are going off and they're saying, 'Turn off the water - NOW!'"

"I try to find some positive, even when something negative happens", Koepka said.
