Khawaja was troubled by a problem to his left hamstring which led to him retiring hurt in the 10-run defeat to South Africa on Saturday although the batsman did take to the field again in the closing stages at Old Trafford.

However, his entrance in the 15-men squad is not yet confirmed as the technical committee of International Cricket Council (ICC) has not approved the decision yet.

As injured batsman Usman Khawaja walked gingerly to the crease in a courageous bid to complete Australia's unlikely run chase against South Africa, it became clear the defending champions were going to great lengths to avoid a Cricket World Cup semifinal against archrival England.

Despite finishing ahead of Eoin Morgan's side in the table, Lyon is adamant that there is no burden on Australia's shoulders because England are the tournament hosts and are the top-ranked one-day side in the world. He's in good form, he played well for Australia A, gives us that nice balance in the middle order.

"He deserves it. He was so unlucky not to be in the initial squad after what he'd done to help us get to that point".

Four years of planning will be put on the line for England when they face holders Australia in a blockbuster Cricket World Cup semi-final at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Fortunately, the Australia A-side is also on tour in England with Matt Wade, a veteran of 94 global one-dayers, in fine form with the bat and ready to fill the breach. "Peter Handscomb will definitely play, 100 per cent", the official website of the cricket World Cup quoted Langer as saying.

Coach Justin Langer instructed all players and staff to remove their socks and shoes for the earthing exercise, which has been used by NSW State of Origin coach Brad Fittler.

Damaging losses to Sri Lanka and Australia left England fearing the worst for their last-four hopes, but an impressive response with wins over India and New Zealand booked their ticket to the knockout stages.

Squad inclusion Pete Handscomb said the 30 minutes of pre-training bonding was aimed at getting "a feel for the ground, literally".

Australian coach Trevor Bayliss was drafted in with the aim of guiding their bid for a first World Cup title.

If you go back 12 months there wasn't much to be relaxed and chilled about in Australian cricket, was there?

Other than losing a tightly-fought contest by 10 runs, Australia also suffered a couple of injuries in batsman Usman Khawaja and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis.

Peter Handscomb has already replaced Shaun Marsh in the squad.

"He wanted to go out, especially when we got as close as what we did". It's tough to talk about replacements when you haven't got the full story.
