"Here's how we're on TV for NBC Nightly News from 30 Rock in the midst of a blackout in parts of midtown Manhattan". CBS News has learned the power outage was caused by a transformer fire.
A woman snaps a photo of the power outage at the 7th Avenue subway station.
The FDNY reports that they are receiving calls from residents without power in the West 40s all the way north to 72nd Street.
The MTA says power went out at four subway stations: 59th Street-Columbus Circle, 47th-50th Street/Rockefeller Center, 5th Avenue-53rd Street and 34th Street-Hudson Yards.
Freddi Goldstein, a spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was campaigning in Iowa for president, said that the mayor had been briefed on the blackout and that the Office of Emergency Management was responding. I just want you guys to know that you're gonna get your money's worth - that we are going to come back and do an fantastic show for you. ConEd initially said it was "responding to extensive outages on the west side of Manhattan". It did not say whether the fire was connected to the cause of the failure.
Two city officials briefed on the situation told ABC News that the outages at first appeared to be under control.
The Twitter account for NY subways said the agency is working to keep trains moving and bypassed affected stations. "More information to come", it posted on Twitter.
By 9 p.m., transit officials were cautioning people to avoid underground stations.
The power outages marked 42 years to the day since a massive electricity blackout affected most of New York City on July 13-14, 1977. But that number refers to sites; buildings and addresses and does not include the power disruption to the subways, traffic lights, and the obvious shuttering of electronic access and egress points, elevators and the like.
The outage was having a widespread effect, with the NY subway system also experiencing power outages in its stations, the agency managing the trains said.
No injuries have been reported so far, according to Con Ed, and the Police and Fire Departments.
