Twitter users are now experiencing challenges logging into the microblogging site.

Twitter Canada's spokesman confirmed the social media service was still down about an hour later, shortly before service was restored.

Twitter experiencing outages for several hours, with users across the United States and elsewhere reporting not being able to access the platform throughout the day.

According to website DownDetector.com, Twitter began experiencing issues around 6.46am. The company said the outage was "due to an internal system change, which we're now fixing".

Twitter crashed for users around the world this afternoon.

Outages were so widespread in Twitter's early years that a cartoon "fail whale" the company displayed during outages came to symbolize Twitter nearly as much as its little blue bird icon. After all, outages had become far less common.

The outage appeared to affect users in North America, Europe, and Asia, according to DownDetector.

A wave of outages has affected major sites throughout the summer including problems at Instagram and Facebook earlier this month that brought the platforms to a grinding halt.

Notably, the unexpected outage occurred around the same time as President Trump's controversial Social Media Summit.
