In 31 months as president, Trump has laid down an extensive record of making his fellow Republicans in Congress squirm with provocative tweets, news conference quips and policies, not to mention his affinity for some US adversaries like North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump had told the group of congresswomen on Sunday to 'go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came'.

Trump warned the four congresswomen of color "fuel the rise of a unsafe, violent hard left".

The resolution by Texas Rep. Al Green, which cites Trump's "racist" comments imploring Democratic congresswomen of colour to go back to their native countries, had no chance of prevailing.

Trump's comments on Twitter on July 14 were directed at Democratic Reps.

It turns out Trump's racist e-tirades are much more influential than we think.

The crowd booed when Trump mentioned Omar's name and a scuffle broke out between Trump supporters and a protester.

"That means they are endorsing Socialism, hate of Israel and the USA!"

"It's not ideal for a lot of people to have to take that vote right now", one of them, Rep. Katie Hill, D-Calif., said of impeachment. "If they don't want to love our country, if they don't want to fight for our country, they can", Trump said.

Trump spent about 20 percent of his freewheeling 90-minute-long speech criticizing the four lawmakers, eliciting choruses of "Booo!" from the crowd, which he praised for its enthusiasm.

All four lawmakers are American citizens, and three of them were born in the United States.

Green said his effort had nothing to do with Mueller's investigation, but that he was focusing on Trump's attacks on the congresswomen, which he said demonstrated Trump was unfit to be president.

"If the American people have to choose between the squad and the president, then that's an easy decision for voters to make", said one adviser. Omar is the only one of the "Squad" the call technically applies to, since the other three women were born in the US. "North Carolina and America needs four more years", Pence said.

The tactic follows a well-worn path for Trump, who called for a ban on Muslims entering the U.S. during his 2016 campaign.

The 7th District congressman defended Trump on the House floor Tuesday where Democrats asked that Duffy's words be stricken from the record, calling them "defamatory".

Further polling adds fuel to the partisan divide: a USA Today/Ipsos online poll released Wednesday morning indicates only 25% of polled Republicans agreed Trump's tweets were "un-American", while an overwhelming 88% of Democrats and 59% of the general public agreed.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted Tuesday to condemn Trump for the remarks, with four Republican lawmakers joining the ranks of Democrats in supporting the bill.

Trump's attacks had a spur-of-the-moment quality to them that the Republican Party later built a strategy around.

They have all been highly vocal critics of Trump's policies, particularly on immigration, which he made the centerpiece of his successful 2016 election campaign. They've also been among the party's most outspoken advocates of impeachment, and all backed Green's measure.

But not all Republicans were comfortable with the approach.

"As I have said over and over again, with all the respect in the world for Mr".
