PlayStation isn't prioritising Sunset Overdrive 2 in wake of Insomniac acquisition

That last part will be of interest to any fans of Sunset Overdrive, Insomniac's 2013 Xbox One exclusive that - despite mediocre sales - has gone on to become something of a cult classic, praised for its novel traversal mechanics and buoyant stylistic flourishes.

Sony and Insomniac have a long history with each other.

Why it matters: The acclaimed developer behind PS4 hit Spider-Man is being acquired by Sony. All of these have been exclusive to Oculus Rift but that relationship could well be at an end, it has just been announced that Insomniac Games has joined PlayStation Worldwide Studios.

Insomniac also developed Spyro the Dragon.

Microsoft's recent slew of studio acquisitions is not going unanswered at its primary competitor Sony as the Japanese company is set to purchase Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games.

At the moment, we don't know what Insomniac Games will first work on as a PlayStation first-party studio, but it'll be interesting to see what kind of aces they have up their sleeve. However, he also said that certain titles - especially multiplayer titles - could potentially receive a wider release rather than being kept exclusive to the PlayStation 4 and/or 5. "Our studio vision is to create experiences that have a positive and lasting impact on people's lives", Insomniac CEO Ted Price wrote in a blog post Monday. He continued with "We have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family. We've enjoyed a special relationship with bePlayStation practically since our inception".

Following the news of the acquisition Bloomberg had a interview with Shawn Layden, chairman of Sony's game studios worldwide, who revealed that going forward first party studios may develop games for formats other than PlayStation.
