Similarly, the various computer model forecasts for the intensity of the storm when it reaches the vicinity of the coast vary tremendously.
The forecast now says that because of conditions favorable for development, Dorian is expected to reach category 3 intensity before it makes landfall.
As always, forecasts are never precisely correct, so it won't be until Thursday, the earliest, before the potential impact on the US will be more certainly known.
A hurricane warning is now in effect in Vieques and Culebra in Puerto Rico as well as the USA and British Virgin Islands. But it still could dump four to 10 inches of rain in a matter of hours in parts of that island and the British and U.S. Virgin Islands.
Risky winds and heavy rain will continue in the Virgin Islands, Culbera, Vieques and portions of Puerto Rico.
Parts of the Bahamas, Florida and other parts of the southeastern US are expected to get hit with heavy rain later this week and into early next week.
