While Moye was filling out paperwork, the driver got a rifle from his truck and started shooting at the officer.

He graduated from the CHP Academy on March 3, 2017, and was assigned to the Riverside County area.

Two other officers were also injured at the scene, but the extent of their wounds was not immediately available. The officer later died of his injuries.

He is survived by his wife, his father, mother and stepfather, and several siblings, authorities said.

Authorities say CHP Officer Andre Moye, Jr. was killed in the shootout Monday just off a freeway during a traffic stop.

Dennis Luther tells KABC-TV that 49-year-old Aaron Luther of Beaumont had been depressed and was having physical and marital troubles before his auto was stopped near a freeway in Riverside, east of Los Angeles. The other two officers also were taken to a hospital.

Police had responded to a call around 5:35 p.m. local time after which the suspect had grabbed a gun and opened fire, said Ryan Railsback, a Riverside Police Department spokesman.

Police withheld the shooter's name and say they don't have a motive for the attack.

"Officer Moye embodies everything that the California Highway Patrol stands for, with the professionalism, dedication and service to the public", Inland Division Chief Bill Dance said. The officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who was shot, Railsback said.

"We don't know where the suspect was coming from, where he was headed to, what his affiliations are", Diaz said.

The CHP tweeted that one officer died. Family members said he previously worked as an electrician but had dreamed of being an officer since he was a child.

"I think he just, whatever else was going on with his domestic situations and his pain, I think he just thought he didn't have much to live for, and I think this might have been suicide by the police", Luther told KTLA5 from his home.

He said his son served prison time for attempted murder but was released more than a decade ago. "And I'm sorry for the policeman".

"I don't believe that, knowing him as well as I know him", he said.

Two bystanders suffered superficial injuries as a result of the shootout, Parker said.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has ordered flags at half-staff Tuesday in the state Capitol in honor of the 33-year-old Moye.

"I think he couldn't cope with his marital problems", Luther said.

"She said she heard 'pop, pop, pop. gunfire, and then a bullet went through the windshield of her vehicle", Luther said of his son's wife.

He told the station Aaron's wife called him shortly after she received a call from her husband about the traffic stop.

Traffic near the shooting scene and the nearby Interstate 215/Moreno Valley (60) Freeway interchange was expected to be affected throughout the morning commute and drivers were asked to find alternate routes, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said.
